Dear Friend, WHAT JUST HAPPENED?My friends, neighbors, clients and even casual acquaintances keep asking us, “What just happened?” People want to know how the United States went from being the leader of free world economies to being the anchor that is dragging these same economies into the deep end of the pool. How in the world could this happen? How did it happen so fast? Everyone with a television set or a newspaper knows that the financial crisis started with mortgages. As a lender, we were sitting at ground zero, so perhaps it is appropriate for us to comment on things as we see them. As terrifying as forest fires and financial crises can be, they seem to be needed, from time to time. In nature, forest fires clear out deadwood and renew the cycle of life. Old trees are taken out allowing greenery to grow where there were shadows. Animals return in healthier numbers and life is renewed. Occasionally, economies seem to need the same sort of destructive rejuvenation. This current crisis is “clearing out the deadwood” in our economy. It will be painful, but perhaps it is necessary. Our economy has recovered from the Great Depression, the dramatic stock decline of 1987, the failure of the S&L’s and other lesser crises. We will recover from this one, as well.
